What to Wear to your Engagement Photoshoot

It can be stressful choosing outfits for your engagement photos. These are photos you’re going to look back on forever (hopefully). I’ve taken SO many engagement photos in the past, and am always looking to see what works, and what doesn’t.

Here are three of my biggest tips I tell my clients to follow when choosing their engagement photo outfits.

And here’s a link to my Pinterest board for engagement outfit inspo that I found online.

Wear What Makes You Feel Good

Confidence is key, right? When you feel good - you look good. Don’t wear something you have to constantly adjust (ie. a short skirt you need to keep pulling down or a tight shirt you have to keep tucking in, etc.). You want to be focused on having fun rather than feeling insecure about what you’re wearing. Don’t worry about what other people may think. Wear what makes you feel your best.

Choose Neutral Colors

A pop of color can be fun, but bright colors tend to distract from the scenery and from your beautiful faces. Most photographers would agree - black, white, cream, and browns look best in photos. Blue jeans look fine of course, but try and mix it up by wearing black jeans or a white dress rather than blue jeans if possible. And when thinking about patterns, don’t worry too much - just don’t wear anything too loud, of course.

Careful Not to Match TOO Much*

Remember all of those family photos from the 90s? Where everyone was wearing the same white t-shirt and dark blue jeans? While in theory it makes sense to be ‘matching’, you’ll want to avoid wearing the same or very similar outfits. My best advice to avoid this, is to choose a color scheme of AT LEAST three colors, and make sure to use all three or more between the two of you. As long as the colors you’re wearing look good together, then it doesn’t matter if you are wearing the same colors.

*There is an exception to this rule! When you intentionally wear the same colors (like this couple wearing all black), it actually can be a dramatic statement. I’ve seen couples wear all white as well, and it looks really classy.
